Commodore's Deck

Boat Shows…Boat Shows and more Boat Shows. The Portland Boat Show generated several new members and promises of interest from several others. Membership, according to the Secretary, is now 71 members!
We have had and continue to have a great group of Catalina Owners and we look forward to more fun this year. As I look out the window and hear the threat of snowflakes fluttering around it seems hard to believe that we are going to have cruises beginning next month. President’s Day to the Quay, St. Paddy’s Day to Riverplace and the ever-popular 20th Annual Astoria-Warrenton Crab & Seafood Festival in April (See Flyer in Newsletter.) Hopefully, it won’t be like last year!
But on you will go though the weather be foul.

Watch for the information from the cruise hosts so you can plan ahead.
I have asked John Meyer and Bill Simon to assist me on the Nominating Committee for the slate of Officers for the April Elections. If you are interested in serving as an Officer next year contact one of us. You might even get a phone call to serve, but don’t wait for the call. Get your name in early.
Great subject at the January Monthly Meeting this month…speaker on Cruising Sail Selection. Next month at the February Meeting, we will have the Diesel Maintenance Session at PCC Rock Creek hoping the Hugh Brock will have recovered from his back injury. The March Meeting will be at West Marine for the Columbia River All Catalina Discount Night. Save your monies($$$$). The April Meeting, besides having elections, I am working at having Brion Toss, Master Rigger, to be the speaker with a longer session than last year.
Happy New Year! This is going to be a great year and you will have fun only if you participate.

CRACA Lifesling Seminar

1, 2002. Learn to use the Lifesling Rescue System!
Every sailor must know how to react quickly in a crew overboard situation.
The Oregon Women’s Sailing Association and the Columbia River All Catalina Association have teamed up to offer a special seminar to teach this valuable skill on Saturday, June 1, 2002.
The Lifesling system is designed so even the smallest person on your boat will be able to rescue and retrieve the largest person. Every participant in the class will receive Classroom training and then practice an actual rescue. First come, first serve, space is limited, so mail your check now for $25 per person including lunch to:

January's General Meeting

St. Patty's Cruise to River Place Marina

16-17. The St. Patty's Weekend Cruise is coming up in just a few short
weeks. I did some checking around and found that another club has already
reserved the entire transient dock. I guess other boaters have the same idea as
us.
There are few better places to spend St. Patty's Weekend than on a boat in downtown Portland Oregon. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I think I heard somewhere that the St. Patty's Boater's Weekend in Portland, Oregon is the biggest boating event west of the Snake River. Consequently, I've tentatively reserved a number of slips inside the transient docks at the River Place Marina. The bad news - they're $25.00/night (payable at the docks on the day you arrive), the good news - quiet waters, electricity, hot showers and downtown access to many Irish Pubs. The city lights at night from the river are beautiful and the distant highway noise will lull you to sleep like a consistent roar of breaking waves.
The details are such: I've only reserved a certain number of slips based on my amazing estimating talents. That means, there might not be enough slips. If you want to come to this cruise and have been slow to contact me for a spot, you might have to tie up at the overflow, Esplanade docks across the river. (Free, but a little less convenient). I will hold the River Place Marina slips until four weeks before and then release any unspoken for slips so that others might access them.
OK, let me repeat this so it's real clear--if you want to come but haven't contacted me by Feb. 14th, you'll probably have to tie up on the East side of the river at the Esplanade docks. And if you do contact me before Feb. 14th but a whole bunch of CRACA people have contacted me before you, you still may have to tie up on the East side of the river at the Esplanade docks. Best thing to do right now is send me an email that you'd like to have a slip at the River Place Marina (mention your boat length) and then mark it on your calendar . Now, as to activities - unless one of you wants to volunteer and be the cruise director, it's going to be in my hands, Mr. Excitement. That means, probably no planned activities again. Just some socializing, maybe some Southern hospitality, and if you really want, I'll barbecue some sour kraut for you want to be Irish folks.

Safety Check Weekend

April 6-7. Remember that every member should have a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Each Year!
This is the weekend to get it done. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron will be available at Hayden Bay and Tomahawk Bay to do your annual VSC.
